What Temperature To Set Your AC To in Summer: A Guide

Thanks to New York’s hot and humid summers and the always-rising cost of utilities, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce their energy usage this summer without compromising comfort. What’s most important is to find a happy medium between cranking up your AC and suffering in the sweltering heat. Unfortunately, this can be tricky.

In this blog, the HVAC experts at Isaac Heating & Air Conditioning discuss the best thermostat settings for your home this summer and ways you can increase energy savings and reduce strain on your system.

Best Temperature & Setting for Energy Efficiency

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® division recommends homeowners set their thermostats to 78 degrees for the most cost-effective cooling during the day. However, depending on your cooling system type and geographic location, this may not be the perfect setting for your unique needs.

Studies show that the average summer temperature for Americans is between 72 and 78 degrees. However, to get the best sleep during the evening, we recommend dropping the temperature to 67 or below.

Smart Thermostat Settings To Make Maintaining the Right Temp Easier

Smart thermostats are an excellent way to maintain the perfect summer temperatures. These systems track your habits and preferences to maximize energy efficiency and sense when you are not home to increase temperatures while you’re away. Many systems have an “eco-mode” that keeps your AC at an eco-friendly temperature.

What To Set the Temperature To When You’re Not Home

Turning off your AC completely when you leave is never a good idea. Instead, keep it running minimally when you’re gone to avoid excess humidity. You can save considerably by increasing your home’s temperature by 7 to 10 degrees. Whether you’re gone for the short-term or long-term, never set your system to anything warmer than 85 degrees to protect against excess humidity.

How To Calculate The Best Temp Without Adding Strain to Your System

Excess strain on your AC can increase wear and tear, reducing its overall lifespan. To be most comfortable this summer without stressing your system, we recommend the 20-degree rule. This rule states that you should never set your AC to anything lower than 20 degrees below outdoor temperatures. For example, if it is 95 degrees outside, you should not set your system to anything below 75 degrees.
